Known for his hold on the R&B/Soul genre, PartyNextDoor (PND) releases his first song of 2023--HerOldFriends produced by OG Parker and G Ry. Party's most recent album was released in 2020 and fans have been begging for an album or at least a few new songs. With a few songs released here and there in 2022, fans need more. Fans also want Party to return to his Break from Toronto sound which he has yet to do since its release in 2013.
With a release date of January 13, 2023 weeks later, this song still hasn't made it to the Top 50 of anyone's charts. The RB&Y team has been a bit underwhelmed by the release of HerOldFriends. Party is blaming his ex's (old friends) for their problems. Some of these problems involve influencing her to have intercourse with anybody, catching several bodies, be coldhearted, and ultimately saying he failed to take her off the streets due to her being influenced by her friends.
There are some one-liners that stood out to us, but while they did, they weren't enough to go back and replay.
It is not unknown that male R&B artists are open about how their relationships go south and are relatively quick to dish out tea on and remarks about their exes. "I can speak about it, real out loud," he says in the song.
While we hope no one utilizes the cringy line, "I'm the H-N-I-C" we can see a lot of PND stans utilizing this line.
"I'm not from Spellman, I ain't got to tell you what that means," Party also says in HerOldFriends. Spellman is an all girl's institution for higher-level education located in Atlanta, Georgia. Party is indicating that Spellman girls have a reputation. We can definitely see all the lover boy's who have had their heart broken by a Spellmanite utilizing this line.
Oddly enough, we can see this song potentially growing on us and others. For now, this is not a song we will be adding to our playlist.
Feel free to give it listen below and let us know what you think. What do you hear?
Update 3/10/2023: You know...I hate to admit, but this song grew on me about a month or so after I wrote this blog. Any song that just doesn't click for me in some way during the first listen makes it to the "Damned & Underwhelmed" section of my blog, sadly. - Ayanna
