My Top Three of January 2023

Writer's picture: Ayanna CooperAyanna Cooper

With a new year comes new music. My Top Three of 2023 is relatively simple and may become some of your favorites. With catchy names and even catchier lyrics, I’ll tell you exactly why these top three should be added to your playlist to bring in the new year. With new releases from Beyonce, PartyNextDoor, and many other’s this was difficult. I should probably mention the technically user issues made this even more difficult, but you can read about that later. list could have gone in many different directions. Especially with several iconic releases circulating at the conclusion of 2022.

1. SNOOZE- SZA

Listen...if you haven't been singing your heart out to SZA's SOS album since its release I need answers! STAT! Snooze by SZA Truly, the entire SOS album could’ve filled this list alone. While this album was released in early December of 2022, it paints the perfect picture of entertaining the things that are bad for us because we’re living in the moment and not thinking long term. SZA is known for her delusional narratives and while it’s not healthy, they’re songs we jammed too for a few weeks in December. With different opinions surfacing on Twitter, I noticed some people are in stages of their life were this album hits home. A place of delusion and lack of self love. Something we’ll pass and snooze on all 2023. There’s a lot of things embedded in this song and the album itself that we’ll break down in future pieces. As of right now, I hope I don’t hit snooze on any of the moments I’ve been waiting for this year here at RB&Y. I hope you don’t either.

Please know I am constantly yelling out the lyrics to this song for the moments to come.

I CAN'T LOOSE WHEN I'M WITH YooOOouuu!
HOW CAN I SNOOZE AND MISS THIS MOMENT?
YOU JUST TOO IMPORTANT!

And of course, Siri would eventually interject,

Sorry, I didn't catch that...

2. Put You on Game by Russ

Yes, I snuck a Rap/Hip-Hop artist onto our list in hopes that you wouldn’t notice. Russ is so versatile that he can go on any list which is one of the many reasons he made it to mine. Russ while well known for being his own producer, sound engineer and more, is still receiving his flowers day by day. As a long time listener of Russ, I appreciate his experimentation with each song as no song ever sounds the same. The sampling and engineering never let me down.

Everyone’s going through somethin’ that nobody knows (Be cool) Relax stay in your lane, leave people alone (Leave you alone)

Are just a few lines that stand out to me as I begin to navigate 2023. Russ always speaks on standing firm on what you want to achieve and don’t focus on what other’s have going on. It’s a nice reminder as we start the New Year. While you’re cutting yourself some slack, cut other’s some too.

3. To Be Determined...Together...With Time.

When I submitted my draft of this blog months ago, I wanted you all to guess my last Top Three of January 2023 based on the songs I shared via an Apple Music playlist. There were some difficulties in constructing a playlist specifically for the RB&Y community and it is something I hope to have resolved sooner rather than later. I am learning and with that, we're learning together. I do apologize for the inconvenience and hope that one day, I have a well structured and available playlist for my viewers to access. Until then, I'm leaving this space for us to determine...together...with time.
